COVID-19: Hoteliers Laying Off Workers Over Low Patronage In Ashanti Region

Some Hotel Managers and Owners in the Ashanti Region have expressed worry over low patronage in services following the reported cases of coronavirus in the country.

This low patronage has forced some of the Managers of these hotel facilities to lay off workers because they said they can no longer pay their staff and also pay the utility bills with the little profits earned.

Foreign Tourists, according to the hoteliers who spoke to Peacefmonline.com are their major clients in this hospitality business , however these people are stuck in their countries following the global outbreak of the virus.

Following the suspension of gathering like conferences, their hotel business has slackened because these programs have been keeping their businesses growing.

Some of the hotels visited were virtually empty with no parked cars which are unusual on working days where organizations, groups, and institutions would be holding their conferences or workshops at these facilities.

The President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has suspended all public gathering including conferences and workshops he said “All public gatherings, including conferences, workshops, funerals, political rallies, sporting activities and religious activities such as services in churches and mosques have been suspended for next four weeks”.

Many of these Hotels visited in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region despite their current situation have put in place safety measures to ensure the protection of their clients by providing hand sanitizers at their front desks to be used by their patrons.

Coronavirus was first reported in China and this virus has spread to other countries killing thousands of people.

Ghana has so far recorded eleven cases.

“Establishment such as supermarkets, shopping malls, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and drinking spots should observe enhanced hygiene procedures by providing amongst other hand sanitizers, running water and soap for washing hands,” the President of Ghana said this when addressing the nation last Sunday.
