COVID-19: Gov't To Provide Food For 400,000 Ghanaian Households - Akufo-Addo’s 5th Address

President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Local and Rural Development to provide food for four hundred thousand (400,000) households and individuals affected by the partial lockdown. 

Addressing the nation in his fifth update on COVID-19 on Sunday, April 5, 2020, President Akufo-Addo empathized with the people of Ghana during these difficult times. 

As part of measures to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians, particularly the underprivileged and destitute population; the President noted the exercise to feed thousands of Ghanaians has begun with immediate effect. 

“ . . the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Local Government and Rural Development, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), working with MMDCEs and the faith-based organisations, have begun to provide food for up to four hundred thousand (400,000) individuals and homes in the affected areas of the restrictions. This begun in Accra today, and will begin in Kumasi tomorrow. It will come in the form of dry food packages and hot meals, and will be delivered to vulnerable communities in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa," he noted.

He further disclosed that he has also directed the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to seek Parliamentary approval for a Coronavirus Alleviation Programme (CAP) which is intended to help various households in the country. 

“We are in difficult times, and that is why I directed the Minister for Finance to send to Parliament the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme (CAP), whose objective is to protect households and livelihoods, support micro, small, and medium-sized businesses, minimise job losses, and source additional funding for promotion of industries to shore up and expand industrial output for domestic consumption and exports," he said.
