The expected strike action by the Coalition of Concerned Teachers today has received mixed reactions from some teachers in the Accra metropolis. The strike action which was to take effect from today, Thusday, May 12 2011, has rather seen some teachers in some parts of Accra and Tema going about their daily class room duties.
A visit by Xfm to some schools in New Achimota revealed some teachers busily teaching their pupils and going about their regular duties.
Speaking to a teacher from Presbyterian junior high in Mile 7, he said they (teachers) were not bound by any law to embark on the said strike action.
When asked if he was a member of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, he answered in the negative and added that teachers had an option to either embark on the strike action or otherwise since the directive for the strike action was given by a group.
The situation was no different at Alogboshie junior high where some teachers at the junior high level had no knowledge of the strike action. Those at the primary level were seen in the class rooms while those who spoke to this reporter said they had no idea there was a strike action.
The Coalition of Concerned teachers embarked on an indefinite strike action in February to register their displeasure against the unfair treatment meted out to them with regards to their migration onto the single spine salary.
Their decision to embark on the strike action was taken after an emergency meeting in Kumasi on Tuesday to discuss government�s refusal to act in accordance with the agreement reached earlier this year when it (government) asked striking teachers to return to the classroom with the promise that their agitations will be addressed.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service says it is monitoring the decision by members of the group to stay out from the classrooms.
Public Relations Officer, Charles Parker Allotey tells Xfm the GES is not ready to cooperate with members of the CCT because it is not a recognized group.
Mr Allotey said checks by the GES have revealed that teachers are still at post, however adding that teachers who vacate their post with no reason would face the consequences.
