COVID-19: We Are Stepping Up Local Level Education This Week - Info Minister

The Ministry of Information has indicated government's resolve to step up local level education on the novel Coronavirus to better inform the general public on the dangers associated with the pandemic.

Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, at a press briefing in Accra, thus cautioned recalcitrant Ghanaians who have decided to flout the directives of President Nana Akufo-Addo regarding the partial lockdown to desist from such behaviour.

He bemoaned that such conduct by a section of the citizenry pose danger to the rest of the nation.

According to him, the transmission of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) takes only one person to affect the large masses and so wondered why some persons would either choose to disobey or yield themselves to ignorance over the spread of the virus despite massive education on the pandemic.

'' . . there's still a good number of persons who have either still not heard or who have not paid particular attention or who just don't believe all that is being said so far about COVID-19. There are some who also hold certain beliefs that are not backed by science. We need to do more to ensure the word will reach all of these persons," he stated.

Hon. Oppong Nkrumah admonished the general public to respect the protocols laid down to fight COVID-19, adding that the Ministry together with the media, traditional rulers and other State authorities will step up local education on the pandemic ensuring the citizens understand the gravity of COVID-19,

''One person alone not observing the measures is a risk to all of us. After all, the virus as it's believed started transmission from just one person far away somewhere in Asia. So, just one person here in Ghana who is not observing puts all of us at risk. To this end, we're going to step up local level education from this week',' he cautioned.

The Information Minister however commended the group of Ghanaians adhering to the government's directive.

''Largely, the general public, as a result of the good work being done through mass media and public health eduation Committees at the local level, the general public has been cooperative in observing the measures introduced to fight the pandemic. And as we've mentioned, these include the social distancing protocols, the need to as much as possible stay at home, then the preventive etiquette of hand washing and the use of sanitizers''.
