As a means of sensitizing the youth on climate change and its related issues amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Daniel Tutu Benefor, Senior Programmes Officer at the Climate Change Unit of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called for determined efforts to address issues on climate change in the country.
He made the call at a discussion with members of the Youth in Natural Resource and Environmental Governance (Youth - NREG) platform on Ghana's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The NDCs are defined climate change actions pledged by countries to reduce emissions that cause climate change and to adapt long-term policies that could help reduce global temperature.
Dr Benefor said climate change issues needed to be resolved with solutions that could help prevent future consequences on human health and the entire universe.
Dr Benefor called for afforestation, low carbon mobility, resilience agricultural practices, renewable energy and waste management.
He indicated that, the participation of non-state actors in the implementation process was essential in the areas of renewable energy, restoration of degraded land and resilience agricultural practices.
Mr Ezekiel Chibeze, the Executive Coordinator of the Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND) and the moderator of the session,lauded the resource person for educating the youth platform on the status of Ghana's Climate Change Agenda with respect to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
He observed that the resent lockdown in Accra and some parts of the country for some weeks saw rapid change in climate as human activities that influence the environment were halted and movement of vehicles on the roads reduced and helped to reduce toxic gases in the lockeddown areas.
