Food Prices Have Reduced Significantly - Market Women, Farmers Assoc. Back Minister's Claim

Some traders and members of the Concerned Farmers Association have corroborated the assertion by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, that prices of basic food items have generally become cheaper over the last four years, compared to previous years.

According to them, the advent of the Government's flagship Planting for Food and Jobs programme has not only resulted in constant availability of some foodstuffs which otherwise were scarce during off-seasons, but has also ensured relative stability in terms of their prices.

The Minister, had in a media interaction last week, asserted that despite the challenges imposed by the Coronavirus, food prices, generally over the last four years, have been very stable.

The assertion by the Minister has received backing from some traders in the Ashanti Region as well as members of the Concerned Farmers Association.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the President of the Concerned Farmers Association, Oboadie Opambour Boateng, said Government's flagship Planting for Food and Jobs has tremendously improved the country's food stock.

He said checks from their nationwide tour has proven that there is enough food available in the country to last for more than three years.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, some traders at Ejisu who are engaged in the trading of various foodstuffs have heaped praises on the Minister for Food and Agriculture and the Government of the NPP led by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for the huge investment made in the agricultural sector.

The women also denied claims by a section of the public that prices of food have gone up, asserting that though the partial lockdown imposed by the President temporarily shot up prices of food items, prices were back to normal.

"We want to assure Ghanaians that we have not increased our prices and the foodstuffs are readily available for everyone," they said.
