The Kassena Nankana Municipal (KNM) Assembly in the Upper East Region, has announced a temporal suspension of the Navrongo Market with effect from Thursday, April 30.
A statement issued and signed by Mr William Aduum, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Assembly, said “The overcrowding of the Navrongo market on market days, with complete disregard for social distancing protocols has the potential of spreading the coronavirus disease (COVID-19)”.
It said the directive was not a total closure or lockdown of the market. “The Market is open for business all other days and people can visit and do buying and selling and leave”.
Mr Aduna urged the public to ensure maximum compliance of the directive.
He explained that the Assembly had consulted the Navro– pio, the paramount Chief of the Navrongo Traditional area and the market Queens before arriving at the decision to suspend the market days.
He appealed to the public to continue to observe the protocols of the Ghana Health Service especially hand washing, the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and social or physical distancing and the compulsory wearing of face masks, to make the collective fight against the COVID-19 successful.
The Kassena Nankana Municipality, on Monday recorded its first two cases of COVID-19 and the Municipal Health Emergency Response Team is currently doing contact tracing of persons who might have interacted with the victims.
