A Research Fellow at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine ( KCCR), Dr Michael Owusu, has categorically stated that observing social distancing and wearing a nose mask can cut down 50% of the virus spread in the country.

According to the Lecturer at the Department of Medical Diagnostics, KNUST, a total lockdown as suggested by people is not the key in addressing the pandemic because Ghana is not ready.

Speaking on Hello FM's 'Akoko Abon' program with the Host, King Edward, Dr Michael Owusu admitted that Ghana is doing much in the effort to contain the virus, however, there is more to be done with social distancing and wearing of face masks protocols.

“The problem, however, is how some people are still deviant and would be flouting the protocols outlined by the government in fighting the virus, and this exposes health workers to high risk in contracting the virus because of their front line duties,” he said.

"I am looking forward to seeing enhanced enforcement with the protocols as observed during the partial lockdown period by the security personnel after the lifting of the lockdown, but things have loosened exposing the country to high risk," he added.

He cited Singapore for instance where all the residents have adapted to the usage of a face mask without any special enforcement.

He revealed that KCCR alone in a day receives 1,500 blood samples for screening telling that the country is doing well in regards to testing capabilities.

Comparing Ghana to other affected African countries, he said the country has done well with the management adding that Algeria is the leading African Country with high cases with high fatalities followed by Egypt.
