Chief Marks May Day With Tree Planting Exercise

Nana Antwi Agyei Brempong 11, the chief of Atwima in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District, on Friday May 1, led his people to plant trees in the community to mark this year’s May Day celebrations.

The tree planting exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Ashan Tree, an NGO engaged in afforestation in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency during the exercise, Nana Agyei Brempong said the trees were not only to beautify the community but to also serve as a guard against climate change.

He said about 85,000 trees would be planted along river banks and other areas to protect the environment.

Nana Agyei Brempong said it would also help boost agricultural activities and increase food production to reduce poverty and improve the livelihoods of the people in his area.

He said the Ashan Tree intended to extend the afforestation programme to other parts of Kumasi to bring it back to its past glory of being the garden city of Ghana.

Nana Agyei Brempong, as part of efforts to fight the coronavirus in the community, presented quantities of nose masks, hand sanitizers and other protective items to the people to prevent them from contracting the virus.

He urged the people to continue to work hard to reduce poverty and keep their surroundings clean at all times and protect their environment to keep them healthy at all times.

The chief advocated for the use of Solar to generate electric power instead of the use of hydro electrical power to help protect the environment.
