President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday cut the sod for the resumption of construction works on the 44-year-old abandoned maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
The government has secured €138 million to fund the completion of the about 750-bed capacity project.

President Akufu-Addo said the completion of the maternity block would help to reduce maternal mortality rate in the Ashanti Region and by extension, in the country.

He said the facility would not only benefit people in Kumasi but its adjourning communities as well.

He explained that the facility would not only serve maternity purposes but also serve as a medical reference center for research across the country.

Speaking to Accra based Citi FM, the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr Oheneba Owusu Danso said the project when completed would boast the operations of health care in the Ashanti region.

“By virtue of this, the hospital would boast of one of the most modern women and children medical facilities in the world when completed," he said.
