President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced measures to curb the surge in infections of Coronavirus in the country following the easing of restrictions on public gatherings.

Delivering his tenth update on COVID-19, the President introduced a phased approach of easing the restrictions indicating that schools will be reopened effective 15th June for final year students.

He further stated that religious activities can commence from 5th June but churches and mosques are to ensure a 100-member attendance and religious services should last an hour.

The President, in annoucing a gradual lifting of the public gathering ban, also allayed fears of Ghanaians that the decision might lead to an increase in the cases of COVID-19.

According to him, national, Regional and district COVID-19 response teams and security agencies have been strengthened and well-equipped to deal with any eventuality.

He noted that ''over recent weeks, we have learnt from the cases at the fish processing plant in Tema, and in the Obuasi municipality, how to deal with such sudden spikes. We will continue to learn, review and adjust where and when we need to do so. We will only proceed with this staggered opening up of our country when it is safe to do so'', adding that ''yes, there exists the possibility of a potential surge in infections. As a precautionary measure, we have strengthened further our existing national, regional and district response teams, with the support of the security forces, to step up to deal with any eventuality''. 

President Akufo-Addo advised Ghanaians to strictly abide by the health protocols regarding the pandemic saying ''fellow Ghanaians, now, more than ever, we must adhere to enhanced personal hygiene and social distancing protocols, wash our hands with soap under running water, refrain from shaking hands, and wear our masks whenever we leave our homes''.
