Railway Sector Responds To Natural Disaster At Achimota

The Ghana Railway Company Ltd has swiftly responded to some damages of its Accra-Nsawam railway line tracks after a heavy downpour in some parts of Accra over the week.

A team of professional engineers led by deputy Managing Director in charge of engineering, Ghana Railway Company Ltd, Ing. Dr. Michael Adjei Anyetei visited the affected site to fix the damages.

Speaking to the media, Ing. Dr. Michael Adjei Anyetei said the situation is “unfortunate” and assured that all damages will be fixed in due time for operations.

According to him, new channels will be created for the free flow of waters to avoid future breakages when there is a flood.

He reiterated that the rehabilitation earlier started from the Accra rail station before the Covid-19 outbreak which forced them to go on a break.

As they resumed, the rains set in, which caused destruction to the track, hence the repair works on the section of the track, he added.

“What caused the destruction is not a failed track but rather a failed storm wall,” he said.

The Accra-Nsawam railway line serves as a means of transportation for residents of Nsawam travelling to the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra, but activities on the line ceased in October 2017 when a Tema-Accra-bound train derailed at Tesano.

The Ghana Railway Company Ltd (GRCL) has engaged a team of about 20 local workers to work on the project. Once completed, the railway line will help reduce heavy traffic congestion, ease high road maintenance costs, reduce an increase in fuel consumption, and an increase in environmental pollution.
