COVID-19: GOV’t To Absorb WASSCE Registration Fees

Final year students in Senior High Schools are scheduled to return to school tomorrow, Monday 22 June 2020 after three months break following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Ahead of the re-opening of schools, President Akufo-Addo has announced that the government of Ghana will absorb the registration fees of West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates for this year's SHS three students.

According to him, an amount of GH¢ 75.4 million will be spent on the payment of the fees for the students.

President Akufo Addo disclosed this at his 12th update to Ghanaians on the easing of restrictions and its impact adding “the importance of education is to the future of Ghana, and the government of Ghana is determined to protect the lives of "Akufo-Addo graduates" and the teaching staff and non-teaching staff."

" For the first time in our nation’s history, the Government will absorb the WASSCE examination fees of the three hundred and thirteen thousand, eight hundred and thirty-seven (313,837) SHS 3 students who will sit for the exam. GH¢75.4 million will be spent on this," portion of his addressed read.

The President also indicated that under the new protocols to keep the students safe, a maximum of only 25 students will be admitted to a class.

Also, day students in schools with boarding facilities will automatically become boarding students.
