Don't Blame Your Failed Campaign Promises On Free SHS Policy- Clement Apaak To Govt

NDC Member of Parliament (NDC) for Builsa South, Clement Apaak has asked the government not to blame its failed promises on the implementation of the free Senior High School policy.

He is also asking the government to render account for the money used in the implementation of the policy.

The free Senior High School education policy pursued currently is supposed to cover the full cost of education.

An amount of $100 million (GH ¢400 million) by the government was to absorb the cost of Senior High School education and make it entirely free for the 2017/2018 academic year.

Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he explained that out of the 5.2 billion Ghana cedis that was earmarked by the government for the policy, only 3.2 billion Ghana cedis has been expensed by the government,
ss such government needs to account for the remaining 2 billion Ghana cedis.

"I think Ghanaians who pay taxes and their taxes are been used to fund the free Senior High School policy of the government deserve to know how and what their monies have been used for," he said, adding that this is a clear indication that the NPP government has failed.

Auditor-General must audit Free SHS Policy

He has also tasked the Auditor-General to perform a special audit on the free Senior High School policy of the NPP government.

"As a minority, we have asked that a special audit be performed on the free SHS policy of the government but all to no avail, but we are still asking that a special audit be done," he added.

Free SHS

In September 2017, the government of Ghana introduced another ambitious education sector reform policy, the implementation of a Free Senior High School Programme.

Under the new policy, all newly enrolled students in public Senior High Schools from the beginning of the 2017/18 academic year did not require to make payments as a condition or their admission and the government will pay.

The objective of the policy, according to the President, is to redefine basic education by ensuring that every Ghanaian child attends school from kindergarten to Senior High School, which will now be the basic education that every child is required to receive.
