WAEC Must Adopt Measures To Eradicate Examination Malpractices - Dep. Education Minister

Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has called on the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to adopt measures that will eradicate examination malpractices.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said this while discussing the misbehaviour of some final year Senior High School (SHS) students who insulted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo because they couldn't write their exams.

The schools involved in the act were Tweneboah Koduah SHS, Juaben SHS and Sekondi College.

Following their uncouth behaviour, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed the students who disrespected the President together with some invigilators who were said to have misconducted themselves during the examination.

The GES dismissed and barred the students named Nicholas Cobbinah, Kardimeil Suapim and John Kwofie, all of Sekondi College, Simon Ameyibor, Thomas Anokye and Juliet Amoakowaa all of Tweneboah Koduah and others from Juaben and Battor SHSs.

The students who vandalized their school properties to register the displeasure have also been surcharged for the full cost of the damages.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', the Deputy Minister believed the students reacted in the manner they did because of their over-reliance on past questions that were given to guide them to write their examination.

He advised the students to note that past questions are supposed to help them know the nature of questions they will face during the examinations, hence they should consider it a privilege should some of the past questions appear in their examinations.

He also stated that the desire to cheat during exams is a major contributory factor to the laziness of the students to study and pass the examinations.

In view of this, he appealed to the examination body to seal all loopholes that may create a situation for the school children to engage in examination malpractices.

He said; ''Cheating in examination doesn't make the school children respect their teachers and the student becomes unserious to study because the person feels he or she will find something to rely on and pass the exam. And, in such cases, you'll see the student has passed and gone to the University but lacks adequate knowledge. The WAEC should put measures in place to check examination malpractices''.
