Ghanaians Beginning To Accept Corruption As A Way Of Life And It’s Dangerous – CDD

Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director, Advocacy and Policy Engagement CDD-Ghana has bemoaned the level of corruption in the country; a trend which has been recurrent for decades now.

He said because of its recurrence, Ghanaians have now accepted it as a ‘way of life’; such that you are deemed weird if you seem to be an honest person.

Speaking on Joy Newsfile programme, Saturday, Dr Asante indicated that “corruption in Ghana is still prevalent and its very pervasive. People are beginning to accept it as a way of life and that for me is the most dangerous thing; where if you are truthful and a person of integrity you are at risk because they feel you are not playing the game and that is very dangerous…”

According to him, the trend of data over a “decade or more tells us that we have failed woefully in our efforts to fight corruption…we have performed below average for the last whatever years we can imagine”.

"If you take all the institutions that fight corruption: the police, judges, etc are perceived to be corrupt by the populace so how on earth are we going to fight corruption?" he queried.

Background

Akufo-Addo's government has been criticized for its inability to fight corruption as promised.

According to critics, there are a lot of allegations of corruption in the ruling administration that has received little or no attention.

The opposition NDC has accused the government of sweeping corrupt allegations like BOST, PDS, others under the carpet.

“Today, we know that the committee tasked to investigate the Movenpina-Zup Oil contaminated fuel saga, has found that the transaction was criminal and that, the proceeds from same has not been paid into the state coffers till date. Indeed, the committee’s report indicates that Movenpina has not paid BOST for the 471,000 litres sold through Zup Oil Limited. The committee also found out that thousands of litres of fuel which was lodged in the tanks of the NPA could not be accounted for".

"Even more bizarre and scandalous is the fact that till date, PDS, the Company made up of friends and cronies of President Akufo-Addo, who were gifted the GHS20 billion assets of ECG on the basis of a fraudulent Insurance Guarantee, and operated same for more than seven (7) months, have not been made to account for the over GHS1.5 billion they collected from electricity consumers during the period,” the NDC said at different press conferences.
