NDC Apologises For 'Upopular' Cancellation Of Trainees Allowance

The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo has apologized to the youth of Ghana for the insensitive decision of the erstwhile Mahama led Government to cancel the monthly allowance payment to Teacher and Nursing Trainees in 2014/2015.

Speaking at a Youth Debate on Asempa FM’s 'Ekosii Sen' program, the NDC youth leader stated; "Yes we apologise for the cancellation of the teacher trainee allowance, it was an unpopular decision and H.E John Mahama if given the opportunity the NDC will continue with it."

George Opare Addo was forced to admit that the Mahama government was callous and apologize forthwith after the National Youth Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Henry Nana Boakye aka Nana B exposed the inconsistencies in the position of Mr. Mahama on the payment of the allowance prior to the 2016 elections and in the lead up to the 2020 elections, and made a very strong argument to the effect that Mr. Mahama is simply engaging in deceptive politicking.

According to him, the then NDC administration abolished the teacher- trainee allowances after training colleges were upgraded to tertiary institutions, indicating that the explanation is not ‘to justify the cancellation of the allowances.’

“So we wanted to migrate them unto the student loan trust fund,” he said.

But the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye who was on the same show accused the NDC of inconsistencies in the position of Mr. Mahama on the payment of the allowance prior to the 2016 elections and ahead of the December polls.

He alleged that NDC’s flagbearer is simply engaging in deceptive politicking.

“In 2016, Mr. Mahama swore heaven and earth that he will never restore the trainee allowance even if it will cost him the elections."

George Opare Addo’s apology comes at the back of a spirited defense mounted by the NDC running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman for the decision to cancel the payment of trainees allowance.

According to her, the NDC never canceled trainees allowance but rather replaced it with students loan.
