ACAT Ghana Appeals To Government To Abolish Penalty

A group named Action by Christians Against Torture (ACAT) Ghana has appealed to government to abolish the death penalty as recommended by the Constitutional Review Commission.

In an interview with Peace FM News, President for ACAT Ghana, Mrs. Miriam Amarteyfio explained that a death sentence only offered an illusion of closure and vindication but no act, not even an execution, can bring back a loved one or mend a heart terribly wounded.

She also stated despite not being enforced since 1993, the existence of the death penalty in the constitution poses a threat of being utilized at a point in time.

She urged Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) as well as religious leaders to join hands in calling for the abolishment of the death penalty.

She also called for clear structures to ensure easy access to legal Counsel.

She made this statement during a sensitization program organized by ACAT Ghana as part of celebrations to mark the 18th World Day Against Death Penalty.
