After months of closure to the public, the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) is set to resume passenger service on the Western Rail Lines.

Official communication from the state company indicated that train service will be operationalized on the 15 kilometer Takoradi to Sekondi via Kojokrom rail line by Monday 19 October 2020.

Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, passenger service was suspended indefinitely, and this decision was taken consultative my with management and partners.

Acting Traffic Manager for the Ghana Railway Company Limited, Comfort Awinya has mentioned that the resumption of passenger service followed a series of assessments and deliberations by management.

A notice signed by Ms. Awinya assured passengers of their safety, stressing that the rail line has been certified by the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA).

"This is after a successful test run by the GRCL, and a joint test run with Ghana Railway Development Authority, the regulator, to ascertain the suitability of the line for passenger service after the suspension of the service in March.

"The line had since been certified by GRDA to be fit for passenger service. The general public is hereby assured of the usu comfortable and safe passenger service GRCL provides."

The resumption of passenger service on the entire Western Rail line [from Takoradi to Tarkwa] remains uncertain as engineering and construction work via the Kojorkrom- Eshiem is yet to be completed. The contractor, Amandi Engineering Limited started laying tracks on the viaduct at Eshiem yesterday [Wednesday 14 October 2020].

A new standard gauge line ins being constructed on the Western Rail line to support both passenger and freight services.
