The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has called on the government of Ghana, the utmost bearer of COVID-19 management, to save all commercial transport users across the country from contracting coronavirus.

This was well echoed in a press briefing organized by the party at its headquarters at Asylum down, Accra Monday afternoon.

Addressing the media, the Chairperson and leader of CPP, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumakuma called on President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to reintroduce the commercial vehicle loading capacity restrictions as soon as practicable to reduce the high rate of COVID infections in the cars.  

She said data available show that our daily average infection recorded as put out by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council is 625 with 1, 132 cases recorded on the 28th of January, 2021. The CPP leader said our efforts to stem the spread is practically far from the common people hence the surge in COVID cases across the country.

According to the CPP, findings show that passengers including school children sit to full capacity in Trotro on daily basis and this has worsened the Ghana COVID case.

Nana Frimpomaa said the use of face mask alone is not enough and until ‘Trotro’ and Taxi’s apply social distancing in their cars immediately, all our efforts will come to nothing and more Ghanaians will fall victim to the deadly virus.

In addressing the impact of such restrictions on commercial vehicle owners and drivers, the CPP leader called on government to device practical schemes in support of Trotro and taxi drivers by way of easing the burden on their daily and weekly sales. She said, during the last restrictions, a lot of drivers lost their jobs because they could not meet their sales target. The CPP said it was ready to sit with government to propose practical options in this regard.

In her final presentation, Nana Frimpomaa called on government to start a vicious contact tracing scheme top contain and reduce the spread of the virus.
