Ghana To Call Europe-Based Players Despite Huge Locals In AFCON Qualifying Squad

Ghana coach Charles "CK" Akonnor will hand call-up to Europe-based players for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations double-header against South Africa and Sao Tome despite given opportunities to huge locals.

Coronavirus traveling restrictions mean the Ghanaian gaffer has been left with little choice to start preparations with 32-man home-based players announced on Friday.

However, the former Black Stars captain will call up top performers in Europe for the must-win game against the Bafana Bafana next month.

Captain Andre Ayew and striker Jordan Ayew as well as regulars Mubarak Wakaso, Thomas Partey, Samuel Owusu and Tariq Fosu amongst others are in line to be called up.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused massive ripples for national team coaches on the African continent as they struggle to get their top players for the double-header due to the situation.

If restrictions are eased, CK Akonnor will hand call-up to the Europe-based players for the crunch ties.

In the meantime, he is leaving no stone unturned to ensure he is not caught off guard after naming top performers in the Ghanaian Premier and second-tier sides to begin preparations for the match.
