11,000 Students Ditch UDS After Gaining Admission

The University for Development Studies (UDS) offered admission to 16,763 applicants in the 2020/2021 academic year to study various undergraduate programmes but only 5,518 accepted the offer, the school’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, has revealed.

Speaking at the 28th matriculation ceremony of the school on Friday, 12 February 2021, Prof Ayum Teye added: "Out of a total of 22,609 undergraduate and 939 postgraduate applications, 16,763 and 512 students, respectively were admitted”.

“However”, he noted, “only 5,518 undergraduates and 355 postgraduates accepted the offer”. He indicated that since the university lost its Wa and Noverongo campuses, it has taken steps to replace them so as to restore the school to its four-campus status.

Campuses, he noted, were being built at Gbanyamni in Tamale and Yendi, adding that some faculties were going to be relocated to the new campuses.

The school, he noted, has also introduced new programmes including Bsc Physician Assistant, Bsc Medical Imaging Technology, Bsc Health Information Management, to enable the university to produce products that would meet the needs of stakeholders and employers. The Vice-Chancellor urged the matriculants to take their studies seriously, adding that only hardworking students are awarded degrees.

He also urged the students to seek counselling from academic advisors, the dean of students, heads of departments and other lecturers, to ensure that their academic activities were not disturbed.

“The university is totally against the activities of unregistered clubs and associations”, he warned. Also, he noted, “occultism and other anti-social and non-conforming practices are outlawed in this university”.

“Any student found to be engaging in any form of occultism shall face the full rigours of the university's rules and regulations," he warned.
