Dr. Asah Asante Extols National Council for Curriculum and Assessment

Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah Asante has jumped to the defence of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), stressing they are effective in executing their duties.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has been bombarded with criticisms over their work in the brouhaha surrounding some offensive textbooks that passed first approval rating by the Council.

The textbooks titled History of Ghana and Golden English contain offensive contents which disparage Ewes and Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Particularly, the History of Ghana describes Ewes as ''juju-loving'' people and goes ahead to include a song that further slights this ethnic group.

Critics have slammed NaCCA for their oversight in detecting the derogatory contents before giving an approval, though not a final approval to the publishers of the textbooks, Badu Nkansah Ltd and Golden Publications for the books to go on the market.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Dr. Asah Asante extolled the virtues of NaCCA saying ''if you're an author and present your book to them, you may end up crying because they thoroughly assess your work. If you don't have the strength to wait, you may leave your book, pick your bag and run away . . . They do a fantastic work''.

"Their eyes are like that of a witch. Whatever it is that is not good, they will throw it away because those who do the assessment are experts and they carefully assess everything to ensure it is accurate before approving it," he added.

He was therefore saddened that these offensive textbooks have soiled NaCCA's reputation.

''It's just unfortunate that this has happened . . . if you look at their work critically, NaCCA will not allow anything that is inappropriate. I talk with authority because I am close to them and know how they work," he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.
