Demolish Witches' Camps Up North - NGO

The Programmes Officer of a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Songtaba, operating in the eastern corridor of the Northern Region, has called on authorities to eliminate the so-called six witches camps operating in various districts of the region. Mrs. Adam J. Lamnatu said the existence of such illegal camps were unacceptable hence the need for them to be demolished by authorities of the various district assemblies where they exist. Her suggestion is in support of a similar call made by the Ameer and leader of the Ahamadiyya Islamic Mission in Ghana, Sheikh Maulvi Wahab Adam at a recent symposium. Adam J. Lamnatu made the appeal when she presented food items to the inmates of the Kukuo witches camp by the Nanumba South District Assembly. She narrated the story of an alleged witch (name withheld) at the Gambaga camp, who said she was prepared to die because of the trauma she was being subjected to at the camp. Mrs. Lamnatu pledged the support of Action-Aid, an NGO, and its development partners, to improve the living conditions of the inmates. Issah Mustapha, Focal person of the Network of alleged witches in the Northern Region, complained about the increasing number of inmates at the Kukuo camp on daily basis. He disclosed that the camp within two weeks recorded as high as 24 new inmates. He reiterated the need for the District Assembly to construct reliable water systems to save residents of the Kukuo community from travelling to the Oti River which is seven kilometers away to fetch water.
