DSP Azugu Must Be Arrested And Publicly Tried - Executive Secretary of ASEPA
Executive Secretary of ASEPA, Mr Mensah Thompson is calling for the arrest and public trial of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Samuel Kojo Azugu for exerting violence on Citi FM’s Journalist Caleb Kudah.
According to him, Caleb Kudah did nothing wrong by secretly taking pictures and filming the abandoned MASLOC vehicles which are public properties and not bona fide properties of the Deputy Superintendent of Police to violently discharge his men to assault the Journalist.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Mr Mensah Thompson emphasized that DSP Azugu must be arrested and tried as this is not the first time he has displayed such brutality on a civilian, recalling his role in the violence that ensued in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
“I am going to emphasize this call again; Azugu must be arrested and publicly tried for exerting violence. This is not the first time. Do you remember the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence? This is the same Azugu who led men to go and brutalize civilians at Ayawaso West Wuogon, and now he is turning the beatings on Journalists,” he said.
Condemning the action of the National Security against the Citi FM Journalist, Mr Mensah Thompson called for a seizure in the country where security people will put the law into their hands to abuse citizens and get away with it as we are not a banana republic.
“We don’t live in a banana republic; we cannot live in a country where security people can put the law into their own hands and abuse any citizen and go escort-free. We don’t have to entertain it. I don’t want us to have a conversation about whether the Journalist was right or wrong. There is no circumstance that should have let them treat the Journalist the way they did. What crime did he commit?”, he bemoaned.
“Even if the journalist has made a mistake, what stopped the national security after he had shown his identity to phone the management of Citi FM to inform them that they have in their custody a Journalist from their end and so they should come with another colleague he sent the photos to resolve the issue? This is how a civil society behaves and not the Rambo style in which they stormed Citi FM to arrest the female journalist,” he suggested.
