Sheer Greed . . . You've No Right To Destroy God-given Water Bodies - Cecilia Dapaah To 'Galamseyers'

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has described as heartbreaking and scary the effects of galamsey on the country's water bodies.

Citing the Birim River, she bemoaned the fact that not only has the water body been contaminated, the illegal miners have also found a way to divert its course.

" . . never have I heard in my life that someone will just divert the course of a water body for selfish reasons," she lamented.

Turbidity level of water bodies

Mrs. Abena Dapaah who was speaking in an interview on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo' further indicated that due to the devastating effects of galamsey, the turbidity level of the water bodies has risen beyond the required level of 50.

The Minister who recently inspected the current condition of the Birim river; a major source of water said, "Kyebi has clean water bodies with a turbidity level of 11 out of 50 . . . in Bunso, the turbidity was 1,900 and 330 in the afternoon meaning when we are asleep, people have been working on the river hence its rise in turbidity . . . the worst was Osino; the turbidity level was over 5,000".

"We have no right to destroy God-given gifts for our selfish reasons. It's like cutting your nose to spite your face. I will urge those involved to stop; it is not good to be greedy," she added.
