The meaning of Academic Capacity is problematic. Does it refer to the volume of the brains of students? Have they shrank? Is it that the schools have become smaller? Is it that there are less textbooks to study with?
Or is it that there are no teachers in the classrooms? Maybe the Academic Intervention Fees government pays for teachers to provide extra tuition is helping make students ‘blockheads’? Or it could be that, as in days of old, students are being sent home for fees and precious time for studying is lost?
What was used to measure this capacity? A teaspoon, a ruler or empirical data?
We are not given any info about the calibre of the listener who shared the comment. Was it a ‘discerning’ listener? 🤣🤣🤣 Was it a listener who has engaged in proper research and produced a body of work that can be assessed and critiqued?
There are some 1.25 million Free SHS students. Has Free SHS reduced the ‘academic capacity’ of them all?
Is one listener’s unscientific comment applicable to all students in Ghana including the Tepa SHS students who gave St Louis a run for their money last week in the Joy FM-sponsored NSMQ? If it is, then we agree that Free SHS has reduced Academic Capacity at Tepa SHS!
Earlier this month, myjoyonline reported: “NSMQ 2021: Nkoranza SHTS rises from ashes to claim Bono-Ahafo Zonal trophy” Does this article show another example of how Free SHS has reduced the academic capacity of the students of Nkoranza SHTS?
Mamfe Methodist Girls High School recently won the 2020 World Robotics and Coding Competition. 13 of its current students led the school to achieve this feat. Indeed Free SHS has reduced the academic capacity for students of Mamfe Girls. So much so that they took on the world in robotics and coding and came first.
Free SHS may not be a perfect policy. However with the excellent WASSCE results, Free SHS has so far proven itself worthy of the investment in it.
No patriotic Ghanaian must sit and be muzzled into a “culture of silence” by any unscientific opinions on the Free SHS policy by those who have a mic in their hands and a platform to broadcast far and wide.
Free SHS is here to stay. So speaking up, with ideas and contributions to make the policy better, is the way to go. Running it down, without any suggestions on how to improve it is mere PROPAGANDA and must be treated with all the contempt there is!
