Two persons have been jailed for a total of 40 years with hard labour for crimes they perpetuated in some parts of the Upper East Region.

A statement from the Upper East Regional Police Command on Monday, June 7, said the two were arrested and put before court as part of a new security strategy to deal with robberies in the region.

It said one of the two, Awinaba Ayembil Joel, 30, who is also a farmer, was picked up in Wasa Akropong where he had gone into hiding after a suspected robbery in Zebilla.

It said he was subsequently put before the Bawku Circuit Court on the charges of conspiracy and robbery.

The court found him guilty and sentenced him to 25 years with hard labour on Friday, June 4.

The second convict, Mathias Asagba, 20 years, was on May 26, convicted to 15 years with hard labour by the Bolgatanga Circuit Court.

The statement added that three others were also in police custody for allegedly beating and robbing their victim of his motorbike.

According to the police, the victim lodged a complaint with the Sandema Police that on May 16, at about 9:15 am while he was travelling on the Fumbinsi-Kanjaga road, he was attacked at a section of the road, beaten and his motorbike taken at gunpoint by some group of men.

One of the suspects, Salifu Gala, was arrested on May 18 at Sandema, after he was identified by the victim.

His accomplice, Amadou Sambo was also arrested at Opiensa a suburb of Doninga in the Builsa South District and a knife belonging to the victim was retrieved from him.

A third accomplice, Adam Yaro, 24 years, was also identified in a motorbike robbery in the same vicinity by one of the victims.

He was arrested at Yagaba in the North East Region.

The three were put before court and were remanded into police custody. They are to reappear on June 28.

Meanwhile, a fourth suspect, Iddrisu Mahadu, is on the run in connection with the same robbery.
