Bullion Van Robbery: We Know Robbers Use Motorbikes But Not All Riders Are Robbers - Kwesi Pratt Cautions Police

Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has cautioned the Police not to intimidate motorbike riders because armed robbers are known for using motorcycles to carry out their operations.

Armed robbers on a number of motorbikes attacked a bullion van at Jamestown, killing two people and hurting the driver of the van before absconding with some money.

An account by the Police read; “Preliminary investigation shows that unidentified armed men on a number of motorbikes crossed the bullion van which was on a pay/collection errand at about 1100 hours and shot at the police officer who was on escort duty on the van, killing him instantly. The armed men also fired sporadically in the air and on the driver, who sustained gunshot wounds and is responding to treatment.

"A hawker was also killed by the armed men when one of two ladies on the bullion van stepped out of the van and run towards the deceased seller's direction. Both ladies on the van, tellers of Mon-tran escaped unhurt but were sent to the hospital to be treated for trauma. Crime scene experts have already visited the scene of crime and are going through the necessary procedures.”

Following the incident, the Police blocked some major roads in the vicinity in pursuit of the armed robbers.

''This is the first-ever in Ghana for such a grand security operation to be carried out. We are pursuing a grand operation as we look out for the perpetrators of this heinous crime. We are also looking out for the booty," Head of the Accra Regional Police Operations Unit, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Kwesi Ofori said after the incident.

He also stated the Police are on a search for motorbikes in hope of arresting the suspects.

"We are checking all motorbikes. The operation will not affect the free movement of people and vehicles," he stressed.

The seasoned Journalist, reacting to an armed robbery incident at Jamestown Monday morning, stated that not all motorbike riders are armed robbers, therefore the Police should be careful in dealing with the riders.

"We know the robbers use motorbikes to do this wickedness but it doesn't mean every person on a motorbike is a robber. Because, if care is not taken, we will be hostile towards motor riders . . . Not all motorbike riders are thieves or armed robbers. So, we should take a critical look at the harrassment of motorbike riders today or else that will also bring another trouble," he said on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo'.
