2021 Population Census: Homeless And Short-stay Population Have Been Counted - Govt Statistician

Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kwabena Anim, has disclosed that the enumerators have already counted the homeless and short-stay population on Sunday 27th June 2021 as part of the reference night for the 2021 population census.

According to him, the enumerators on Sunday, 27th June 2021 enumerated certain target population which include those who sleep outside (homeless population) and those who were travelling over long hours.

Adding to his explanation of the Sunday, 27th June 2021 exercise on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Professor Kwabena Anim said that the counting was done at the reference night to capture those people who will spend most of the night travelling.

“ . . so our enumerators were at the terminal points to count them . . . including those who sleep outside (homeless population),” he disclosed.

He further mentioned that the enumerators as part of their activities of the reference night for the 2021 population census counted the population at the short-stay institutions like hospitals, hostels and guest houses; indicating that the counting of people at the short-stay institutions will continue.

Professor Samuel Kwabena Anim, however, said that starting from Monday, 28th June 2021 to 11th July 2021, the counting of the household and the long-stay institutions like the boarding houses and the university halls of residence will begin.

He, therefore, pleaded with Ghanaians to make themselves available for this national exercise for the next two weeks; adding that those who intend to travel to their hometowns to be counted should rescind their decision as measures have been put in place to reach everyone in the country.

“Ghanaians can go about their normal duties because they will be counted at their convenience in terms of their residence at the right time,” he assured.
