Ejura Riot Probe: I Never Saw Any Protestor Wielding a Gun - Eyewitness

Justice Koomson Committee on Monday saw four people testifying to the riot at Ejura which led to the death of two persons and others sustaining several degrees of injuries.

The committee chaired by Court of Appeal Judge, His Lordship Justice George Kingsley Koomson started the sitting last Tuesday and is expected to end this Friday after the extension given to them by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery.

One of the deceased relatives who happen to be the Ejura Dagomba Chief, Alhaji Umar Hussein told the committee how his grandson (Murtala Mohammed) was shot at the back and right rip during the riot at Ejura by some youth.

The Linguist to the Chief, Abdul Wahab Alhassan who represented his Chief at the Committee Probe said, his grandson was not even allowed to be medically examined by doctors by the agitated youth after his death following a heated agitation that had filled the hospital premises.

Murtala Mohammed was said to have told his grandfather he was going to buy food and the news surrounding his death was broke to his grandfather just after 10 minutes.

Abdul Wahab said the Dagomba Chief and his entourage were not privy to any pending demonstration but got to know about the chaos on Monday after the burial service of Kaaka who was not an indigene of Dagomba but lived within the Dagomba Community.

"After the prayers for Kaaka's body for internment, we headed home and we realized how chaotic the community was,” he added.

He pleaded with the committee not to disappoint the country but work within their mandate to bring justice to the family of the victims.

A Second Witness who appeared before the Committee was Abdul Nasir Yusif’s brother, Isahaku Abubakari who also told the committee his side of the story, adding that he witnessed the clash between the security and the irate youth.

"On my way to my office on that fateful day to pick some census officials to Brigade (a community at Ejura) I saw some irate youth demonstrating, after some few minutes I saw a military vehicle pulled up and the officers gave two warning shots in the air."

“ I saw one military officer squatting to fire a gun and later kneeling to fire another bullet,” he revealed.

When asked by the committee if by any means he saw some of the protesters carrying a gun or any weapon, he replied no.

This question was in line with the statement made by the Military that some of the protestors were carrying guns when faced the committee during one of the proceedings.

Kaaka's Wife account

At her turn, Sahada Hudu, the wife of the murdered Social Media activist, Macho Kaaka inquired from the committee if the probe is meant to find the killer of her husband or the police have been tasked to do.

The Chairman of the Committee, His Lordship Justice George Kingsley Koomson explained to the widow that, the purpose of the committee is to find what caused the disturbances and make recommendations to the government through their findings to avert similar occurrences in the future.

“We are mandated to find the cause of the riot and if possibly it might have started from the death of your husband, it will be very important to look at the situation as well,” he added.

He added that the Police are the ones who have been tasked to investigate the murder of Kaaka.

Sahada Nuhu on her accounts said her husband had been threatened by some members of the New Patriotic Party in the area following her series of report on social issues in the area on Facebook.

"My Husband has been briefing me everything anytime he comes home, so I was aware of everything,” she recalled.

Asked how she got to know about the killing of her husband, she said she was asleep in her bedroom that fateful day and was called by a neighbor to come out after hearing some sharp groan outside.

They both went to the scene and they saw her husband been clubbed down by unknown persons.

Sahada Nuhu have five daughters with Macho Kaaka and the eldest daughter is 18 years whilst the youngest is 2 and a half years old.
