We'll Pay The E-Levy But... - Dr. Smart Sarpong To Gov't

A Senior Research Fellow of the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Smart Sarpong, has welcomed the 1.75% e-levy proposal by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta while reading the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on the floor of Parliament.

The e-levy, according to the Minister, ''will be used to support entrepreneurship, youth employment, cyber security, digital and road infrastructure among others''.

''Mr. Speaker, this new policy also comes into effect (once appropriation is passed) from 1st January, 2022. Government will work with all industry partners to ensure that their systems and payment platforms are configured to implement the policy," he added.

The e-levy has generated controversies with the Minority in Parliament kicking against it.

They claim it will aggravate the sufferings of Ghana.

Addressing the issue during Peace FM's ''Kokrokoo'', Dr. Smart Sarpong held a view that the e-levy is a good initiative but cautioned the government not to misuse it nor used it for anything other than its intended purpose.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi, he said; ''Sincerely speaking, of course, no one likes payment of the tax but for the purpose of what you say you're going to use it for, roads and Youstart among others; I dare say that many people are changing their minds. We will pay the tax but we plead with you to use it for its purpose. We will be watching you.''
