Strike Action: UTAG Defies Court Ruling

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has refused to heed a High Court ruling to rescind their strike action.

The University teachers have been on strike for weeks and have been directed by an Accra High Court to resume work following a law suit by the National Labour Commission (NLC) against the striking Lecturers.

The Labour Division of the Accra High Court on Tuesday put an injunction on the strike after it upheld an interlocutory application by the NLC.

The court presided over by Justice Frank Aboadwe Rockson ordered UTAG to suspend its strike immediately and, additionally, the lecturers cannot embark on any strike until the final determination of an application filed at the court by the NLC.

But according to the President of UTAG, Prof. Solomon Nunoo, in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's morning show ''Kokrokoo'', UTAG isn't ready to rescind its decision.

He disclosed that their demands haven't been met yet, so they are filing a countersuit in the court.

He noted that the Association isn't pleased with the court order, therefore, they have directed their legal counsel to fight back the case.

UTAG, he revealed, will reappear in court on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

''Tomorrow at 1:30 pm, they will look at the substantive case to declare whether the strike is legal or illegal, and also the motion to set aside the injunction ruling also has been filed . . . The calls coming in about the President intervening, I think it is all in the right direction. If the President will step in and intervene, fine, I think it will also help the matter but the most important thing is that the condition of service of the University teacher is extremely bad and must be dealt with," he said.
