Universal Health Coverage Won't Be Complete Without Quality Healthcare System - Health Minister

The Chairman for the Assembly of West African Health Ministers and the Health Minister in Ghana, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Dormaa Central, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman Manu has urged his colleague Ministers from the ECOWAS sub-Region to ensure measures and cultures that improve healthcare are institutionalized for proper healthcare systems.

Speaking at the first ever high-level summit of the assembly of ECOWAS Health Ministers on the Universal Health Coverage in Accra, Hon Kwaku Agyeman Manu said Ghana developed and implemented her national health care quality strategy five years ago.

This policy and strategy, he said, is aimed at ensuring Ghana does things differently to satisfy the citizens’ expectations whilst promoting efficiency and effectiveness.

Hon Kwaku Agyeman Manu opined that ECOWAS must begin to address challenges that lead to the heavy impact of the COVID-19 pandemic of all sectors of the economy and be prepared to prevent or manage future episodes.

He called on all members of West African Health Organization (WAHO) to ensure transparency, accountability and social participation as key element to effective and equitable extension of universal health coverage to all the citizens.

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Hon Ken Ofori-Atta, who was at the summit, also said the Ghana government as part of her commitment to the health sector has invested in the sector including expanding the NHIS from 11 million in 2016 to 16.8 million by the end of 2021 representing a 52% increase.
