Opoku Ware School Unveils 70th Anniversary Plans For Students In June 2022

The 70th Anniversary Planning Committee of Opoku Ware School says it is celebrating students of the school in June 2022 as part of the school’s year-long activities marking the founding of the school in 1952.

According to Planning Committee Chairman Kat. Nana Joe Mensah (V53) the activities include an inter-school debate, a forum between management and the SRC, a Careers’ Day, a lecture on time management and an open-air entertainment night at the school’s foyer, with awards to deserving students sponsored by a group of past Senior Prefects of the school.

Explaining the rationale behind what the committee has dubbed ‘Student Appreciation Month’, Kat. Nana Mensah said students are a core stakeholder group and therefore it was important to ringfence events that they could be part of in a direct, meaningful and impactful way.

“Students have particular needs that meet their aspirations, and it was important to create a dedicated space where our boys could flourish in the celebration of their school’s special anniversary. The student leadership was consulted in the drawing up of the month’s programme and they are involved in its planning and delivery”, he said.

Founded in February 1952, the school has already held a public lecture and organized a special birthday event to mark its anniversary. Other activities have included afloat through principal streets in Kumasi as well as a health outreach programme for the school’s catchment community.

The Planning Committee Chairman revealed that other events lined up for the rest of the year include a special dinner with the school’s surviving former headmasters, a homecoming event, a social weekend with past students of St. Louis SHS, a Staff Appreciation Month and a grand durbar on 3rd December 2022, followed that evening with a 70th Anniversary Ball.

The theme for the anniversary is ‘Seven Decades of Discipline Through Self-Discipline.’
