Ms. Irene Opoku, Acting Director of Greater Accra East, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has appealed to Ghanaians to actively participate in the management and sustenance of the environment for human survival.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency in Tema, Ms. Opoku explained that the management of the environment was to ensure a healthy state of the planets and preserve all forms of lives devoid of environmental pollution. 

Ms. Opoku explained that sustaining the environment to provide a serene atmosphere for all individuals, businesses, clients, and other activities to enhance development.

She cautioned against the burning of waste and other substances in the communities and noted that some of the chemicals being burnt may contain some substances that would endanger human and plant lives.

She mentioned that there was the need for a collective effort of individuals and other stakeholders to consistently address environmental issues as well as initiate sound measures to protect and enhance the environment.

She said it had become necessary for business entities to put systems in place to manage environmental risks.

Touching on the suspected chemical substance pollution that occurred at Tema Newtown on May 10, 2022, she said the Agency was still tracking the source of the pollution.

She said the Environment Quality Department of the Agency took a sample at the affected areas and made an analysis but the source of the chemical substance had not yet been revealed.

She said the difficulty in determining the source of the chemical substance could be because the sampling was not done at the time the substance was in the atmosphere.

Ms. Opoku assured the public especially residents that the Agency was still on track to ensure that the source was determined to ensure the safety of Ghanaians.
