Romania's Razvan Lucescu resigned his post as the national coach on Saturday, less than a day after the national side crushed Bosnia-Hercegovina 3-0 to relaunch their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012.
The Romanian federation announced Lucescu had sent a letter informing them of his "immediate resignation", which it accepted. He is to rejoin Rapid Bucharest.
Lucescu counts seven wins, seven draws and seven defeats from a total of 21 matches in his two-year tenure, which began in April 2009.
Romania's second win from six games leaves them fourth in Group D on eight points, five behind leaders France and only one behind Belarus. Albania, who have a game in hand, sit third also on eight points.
The Mediafax news agency quoted Rapid's majority shareholder, George Copos, as saying the 42-year-old Lucescu has signed a four-year deal to rejoin the side he coached from 2004 to 2007.
In the meantime Romania will be coached by national under-21 coach Emil Sandoi.
