Youth Charge On Chief

CONCERNED YOUTH of Akyem Tafo in the East Akim Municipality of the Eastern region have condemned their chief, Osabarima Adusei Peasah, for his comments made at Kyebi last Thursday to the effect that he and Okyeman support the second term of President Atta Mills. The chief of Akyem Tafo was alleged to have made the comments when he was delegated by the Okyenhene to stand in for him at a durbar of chiefs and people of the area, in honour of the president, at Abuakwa State College. Newspapers and radio stations carried the story, with the two state-owned newspapers, Ghanaian Times and Daily Graphic, giving banner headlines. At a press conference at Akyem Tafo on Friday to express their indignation at the chiefs comment, the concerned youth said by his comments, the chief had exposed himself to public ridicule which would not only affect the image of the town but its citizens as well. If Osabarima is no more a chief but now a politician, he should tell us so that we can address him as such, the concerned youth said. The spokesperson of the youth, Michael Atsu, said the chief had greatly disappointed them, pointing out that with all the opportunity given to him to tell the President problems confronting the people in the area, he chose to sing the praises of the government. Where the durbar was held, there are serious illegal mining activities going on, resulting in the pollution of the Birim river which is our source of drinking water. The forest is seriously being depleted by chain saw operators while most of the feeder roads in the municipality are in bad shape but the chief could only ask for the endorsement of President Mills, the spokesperson said. According to him, the government hospital at Akyem Tafo did not have an ambulance while towns like Nobi, Anweaben, Obodanase, Abreponsu, Birimso and Bosodomase had very bad roads, yet the chief could not tell the president any of these problems. We want to serve clear notice to Osabarima Asiedu Peasah, we are not very happy with this development and will definitely organize ourselves and demonstrate against him for showing that he does not care about the people in his area, the concerned youth said.
