Gerardo 'Tata' Martino Sacked After Mexico Exit World Cup Group Stage for the First Time Since 1978

After tying Poland on points, but falling short of second place on goal difference, the Mexican Football Federation announced that first team boss Gerardo 'Tata' Martino has left his role.

At the 2022 World Cup, Mexico had a record of 1-1-1 - opening with a draw against Poland, followed by a loss to Argentina then a win over Saudi Arabia.

That result meant Mexico's streak of making it into the knockout stages ended at nine tournaments. The last time they failed to make it out of the group stage was 1978.

'I am responsible for today's result,' Martino said in the post match press conference, later adding: 'My contract ended as soon as the referee blew the final whistle and there is nothing more to be done.'
