Police Explain Arrest Of Radio Panelists

The Police in the Ashanti Region have explained that the two panelists arrested on Kapital Radios breakfast show on Thursday June 9 were arrested because of threats of murder and arson against the person of the mayor of Kumasi and the offices of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. The Director of Public Affairs at the Ashanti Police Command told Citi News that Mr Samuel Sarpong lodged a complaint about threats issued by two panelists against him and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly whilst contributing to a radio discussion. Chief Inspector Mohammed Tanko added that the two were arrested for the alleged threat and nothing else. We received a complaint from the Mayor of Kumasi that there were some guys on Kapital Radio who were making threats against him and KMA. They threatened to kill the Chief Executive and burn down the offices of KMA. "So we mobilized our men to Kapital Radio and waited till the program was over and those who made the statements were escorted to the Police Station for their statements. Later in the day they were released on Police Enquiry bail. Chief Inspector Tanko rejected allegations that Kumasi Mayor influenced the Police to cause the arrest of the two. The Mayor reported to us what had been said on Kapital Radio and in our own estimation we thought it warranted an arrest and subsequent investigation and that is why we did that. News Editor of Kapital Radio, Erastus Asare Donkor also confirmed to Citi News that the comments were in fact made on air by the panelsts.
