The number of deaths recorded by the Nigeria Police across the country is now causing President Goodluck Jonathan sleepless nights, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim has said in Uyo.
Ringim made the revelation while addressing officers and men of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command during a familiarisation visit to the state and the commissioning of the Police Secondary School built by the state government in Ukana, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
He also said the recklessness and corrupt approach of some members of the force was worrisome to the President and warned that any policeman found culpable in such illicit practices would face dismissal and prosecution.
�We are very concerned about the number of our men being killed on the road; even Mr. President is more concerned than myself. It is not right to fire at a moving vehicle or stand in the front of any moving vehicle,� Ringim said.
According to him, anybody who stands in the middle of the highway to stop moving vehicles is indirectly attempting suicide. He cautioned the officers and men against firing at moving vehicles even if such drivers refused to stop.
Ringim said it was wrong for policemen to jettison professionalism while on duty for the sake of fast and unaccounted money.
�Your best bet is to be a good professional, but some of us don�t like to work where there is no money. It is big shame, we have officers who worked hard to cancel their transfer only to land themselves in trouble,� he said.
