Kumawu By-election: They Handled Kumawu Very Well - Dr. Smart Sarpong Applauds Police Service

A Senior Research Fellow of the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Smart Sarpong has commended the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and the Ghana Police Service for their role in the Kumawu by-election.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim was declared winner of the by-election in the Kumawu constituency of the Ashanti Region held on Tuesday, May 24, 2023.

Per the results declared by the Electoral Commission, Yaw Anim polled 15264 representing 70.91% of the total valid votes cast as against the National Democratic Congress' Kwasi Amankwaa who had 3723 votes representing 17.29%.

Two independent candidates who contested in the race, Kwaku Duah with a bird as his symbol had 2478 votes representing 11.51% while the other Kwaku Duah with a hoe as his symbol had 62 votes representing 0.29% of the valid votes cast.

Dr. Smart Sarpong noted that the Police presence in the community played a key role in making the by-election violence-free and successful.

"They played a huge role in making Kumawu very peaceful. The Police were well-behaved, well-dressed. They handled Kumawu well," he said on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' morning show.

He also narrated how amazed he was to meet the IGP who he stated wasn't readily noticeable because of his humility and friendliness.
