Taxi Driver Chops Off Nephews Hand

The police at Aiyinase in the Ellembele District of the Western Region have referred to the Attorney-Generals Department (A-G) for advice, a case in which a taxi driver, also based at Aiyinase, has allegedly chopped off the hand of a seventeen year old student, Ebenezer Bolo. The investigator in the case, Inspector Appiah, told The Chronicle on Saturday that though the case had already been sent to court for hearing, they had decided to sent it to the A-Gs Department for advice, due to its complex nature. Explaining the circumstances that led to the bizarre incident, the victim, Ebenezer Bolo, said he picked a quarrel with his father, for which the accused person, who is his uncle, did not agree with him. According to him, though there was a misunderstanding between him and his uncle, the issue was settled only for the latter to raise it again a few days later. This resulted in a fight between them, during which his uncle went for cutlass and slashed him on the shoulder. His attempt to block the second slash resulted in his wrist being cut off. Meanwhile, the mother of the victim, Madam Theresa Arthur, has accused the police of failing to ensure justice for his son. According to her, the police were in bed with the accused, and are, therefore, refusing to ensure that he is brought to justice. Madam Arthur noted that though they had appeared in court twice, the procedure adopted by the police in prosecuting the case leaves much to be desired. She also questioned the rationale behind the decision to transfer the case from Nkroful to Axim for prosecution, which has so far, had not yielded any positive results. She further accused the police of coaching the accused person as to what he must do and say in court. To her, she had lost confidence in the police to ensure that her son got justice in the case. Inspector Appiah, however, denied the claim, describing it as a fabricated story. According to him, though the case had been transferred to the court at Axim, it did not make any difference, because it was the same judge who shuttles between Axim, Nkroful and Aiyinase to hear cases.
