Two persons have died following gunshot wounds they sustained during a highway robbery attack on the Accra-Ho highway in the early hours of Tuesday, June 14, 2011. One of them, only identified as Moses, a driver�s mate of a tipper truck, was shot by the armed robbers while the other, believed to be a Fulani, is one of the robbers who were hit by the police in a shoot-out. The National Highways Patrol Unit Commander, Superintendent Obed Dzikunu, in his narration said on that fateful day, a team from his outfit operating on the Ho-Accra road chanced upon a tipper truck with registration number AS 7993-10, with one Michael Amponsah at the wheels, and a Hyundai bus registered GT 6310-10 being driven by a certain Prosper Agbeko, which were under attack by highway robbers. When police arrived at the scene, the truck driver�s mate, Moses, had been shot dead and was lying in a pool of blood. On seeing the police, the robbers opened fire, causing the police to return fire. In the ensuing shoot-out, one of the robbers, believed to be of Fulani extraction, got shot, leading to his instant death. The rest of the robbers who are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds took to their heels and fled into the bush. The police boss appealed to the local people as well as health workers in the area of the incident to be on the look-out for persons with gunshot wounds in the hospitals, clinics, and various herbal centres and report them to the police for investigations. The police also retrieved a club and a German made short gun from the scene. Supt. Dzikunu promised that the police would employ all tactics under their sleeves to arrest the robbers and bring them to book. He advised the public to comply and be obedient to the commands of robbers during violent attacks in order to protect their lives. Meanwhile, the remains of the two have been conveyed to the Police Hospital in Accra for autopsy.
