Four Assault Pregnant Woman...

Four people were on Monday put before a Kumasi Circuit Court for beating a five-month-old pregnant woman leading to the death of her unborn child. The four, Alhaji Mamudu, 35, driver; Janet Wiafe, 22, unemployed nursing mother; Zinabu Abdulai, 23, unemployed and Asamoah Yakubu, 16, a Junior High School pupil; are being tried for causing unlawful harm to Akua Serwaa, the pregnant woman. They pleaded not guilty and the court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amo-Yartey admitted Wiafe and Yakubu to a bail of GH10,000 each with a surety, while Mamudu and Abdulai, were to be remanded into prison custody until June 20, 2011. The presiding judge explained that he was compelled by the fact that Wiafe was a nursing mother and Yakubu, a student, to grant them bail else I would have remanded all of you. Presenting the facts of the case, Inspector Joe Debrah, told the court that the complainant and the accused persons lived in the same area at Bremang Abusukruwah. He said on May 14, this year, at about 9:30a.m, Janet Wiafe picked a quarrel with one Ataa Konamaah. Inspector Debrah said while they were quarreling, Serwaa came in to mediate and asked Konamaah to curtail the fight. However, he said the action of Serwaa infuriated Janet Wiafe who told the complainant that she was the one she (Janet), was looking for. According to the prosecution, Janet Wiafe threw a sauce pan full of water on Serwaa and also hit her son in the process. He said in her attempt to run away, Serwaa fell down and the third accused person and her aunt at large grabbed her by the throat and Zinabu Abdulai kicked her in the stomach. Mr. Debrah said Serwaa later lodged a complaint with the Suame Police Station where she was issued with a medical form to attend hospital. He said a few days later, she experienced severe pains in her stomach and reported to the Glory Hospital at Kronum, where a scan performed on her revealed a dead foetus. She was issued with a second Police medical form to enable her to have an operation where she was delivered of the dead foetus. The accused persons were later arrested and put before the court after investigation.
