Ghana is Broke: Sammi Awuku Replies John Mahama

The CEO of the National Lottery Authority, Mr. Sammi Awuku has revealed that the New Patriotic Party came to inherit a heavy debt left by the NDC-led government.

Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo morning show, the NLA boss revealed when the NPP-led government assumed office, much of the revenues that were accrued were used to service the debt and its related interest left behind by the NDC.

Mr. Awukus's response to the former President Mr. John Mahama came to light when the former President expressed his opinion of the fact that Ghana is broke. The aspiring Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, says Ghana is broke and must be saved by the NDC-led government.

The former President made this revelation while delivering a public lecture on the financing of political campaigns in Ghana.

According to the former president, the International Credit ratings agencies have placed Ghana in the ''junk'' status and this ''shameful tag'' could only be taken away by the NDC when elected into office.

However, Mr. Sammi Awuku argued that, if the former president claims Ghana is broke, then he should ask the genesis of the brokenness. The NLA boss noted categorically that every country is in debt but the question is, where did the debt start from and what can be done to service the debt?

He further added that, despite the herculean debt, the Nana Addo-Bawumia-led government has brought some transformative interventions. One of the biggest interventions in the history of Ghana is the introduction of the Free SHS which has impacted so many lives and livelihoods.

Mr. Awuku said, ''Apart from the Free SHS educational intervention, the NPP government also invested in the healthcare sector by building hospitals in one hundred and eleven locations across the country''. ''In addition to the hospitals, the government also dispatched three hundred ambulances in a single day across the country'', he added.
