Vote Buying Is Dangerous for Our Democracy - NCCE Warns

Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Kathleen Addy has implored politicians in the country to stop their public display of distributing money to supporters and delegates of their parties during elections.

With this year being an electioneering year, Madam Kathleen Addy expressed worry over what it is termed as moneycracy which has crept into Ghana's body politic.

Moneycracy is a system where the rich dominates the society or government; it is the rule by the rich, hence the highest bidder wins no matter the person's character, qualities, qualifications or otherwise.

Speaking in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' show Wednesday morning, the NCCE boss warned the political figures fueling this kind of politics to desist from it stressing it is a danger to democracy.

She explained that since political aspirants are compelled to cough up money to buy votes, it may encourage people to use illegal means to acquire wealth, hence when this is encouraged, it will corrupt Ghana's elections and destroy the democratic structures.

She also dreaded people going for what is called "drug money" in order to win elections.

“This problem must be eliminated. If we can see the threat and the consequences of this thing, it will help us a lot,” she cautioned.
