GHS Receives 1,510 Vails of Rituximab to Support the Treatment of Cancer

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has received one thousand five hundred and ten(1510) vails of rituximab to support our country’s effort towards the treatment of childhood cancers.

The support from Amgen and World Child Cancer is to communicate psychosocial support to families and children diagnosed with cancer in our hospitals.

The Project Co ordinator at World Child Cancer, Juliet Akuamoah Boateng in an interview with Peace said they understand that addressing childhood health issues, especially chronic diseases such as cancers, is crucial because it prevents long-term health complications, and reduces future health financing challenges.

According to him ,they have been instrumental in enhancing the capacity of healthcare professionals to aid early and accurate diagnosis, improve treatment and provide financial, nutritional and psychosocial support for affected children and their families.

Speaking about the scholarship scheme for the children living with cancer, she said due to the amount of money charged for the treatment of cancer , they decided to award scholarships for children suffering with cancer to support them with financial needs.

The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr.Anthony Adofo Owusu on receiving the vails of rituximab said cancer medicines are very expensive which makes it very difficult for parents to afford them and this donation is going to go a long way to save the life of children suffering from cancer for a better health care delivery in the country .

He said over the years, the government of Ghana has been apt in fostering the necessary collaborations among both state and non-state actors to improve child health as one of the key indicators of universal health coverage. In our national efforts against childhood cancers, World Child Cancer has been instrumental- enhancing the capacity of healthcare professionals to aid early and accurate diagnosis, improve treatment and provide financial, nutritional and psychosocial support for affected children and their families.

The journey of treatment, care and management of childhood cancer is arduous, filled with pain, uncertainty, and countless challenges yet, amidst this adversity, hope stems from the kindness of donors like Amgen and World Child Cancer.
