Free Dialysis: KATH Starts Treating Patients for Free

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has commenced the implementation of the free dialysis policy introduced by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The National Insurance Scheme had stated that, from the month of June, the scheme will absorb the cost of dialysis for all patients at different proportions, with the vulnerable groups receiving free eight sessions per month.

The scheme stated that, the cost of all eight dialysis sessions per month for patients aged under 18 and above 60 years, which it has described as the vulnerable group, for an initial period of six months.

The Chief Executive officer for the scheme, Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, in an interview with Peace FM’s Kwami Serfa Kayi, had stated that patients who fall within the age bracket of 18-59 years will have their cost of two dialysis absorbed every month at all government facilities.

Information gathered by Peacefmonline.com, indicates that, the free dialysis has taken effect at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, in the Ashanti region with some patients expressing their gratitude to the government through the Notational Health Insurance Scheme’s secretariat.

The hospital’s authorities said on June 6 that until they received the formal communication, the patients would be required to pay.

The free dialysis policy is an intervention by government to bring relief to patients who have had to cough up GHc 595 per dialysis session.
