The Greater Regional Police has said it cannot provide security for a National Democratic Congress (NDC) group planning to embark on a demonstration on Friday.
The group called NDC Foot-Soldiers in Ghana informed police it would hit the street to protest against what it says is gross bribery within the party being perpetrated by the Office of the President.
But the police put a knife in the planned demonstration when it said the leadership of the group could not fulfill the Public Order Act.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Kwaku Dompreh, told Joy News the group only informed them of their decision to hit the streets because of an alleged bribery and intimidation of some party members ahead of the July Congress to elect a flagbearer of the party.
He wants the group to follow the right procedure in order to stage the demonstration. "The conditions are that, one; those who want to do the demonstration - the leader[s] - we must know them. Number two; the date, the route to use, where they are going to converge and where they are going to end: We must know all these and then together with the leaders, we plan how we are going to assist them to go through the process," he explained.
Meanwhile a member of the group, James Kofi Amammuo has told Joy News the group is meeting to provide the police with the needed information to enable them embark on the demonstration.
He said �the one who took the bribe is a delegate. The bribe came from the Office of the President,� adding the delegate is from the Central Region and the amount involved is GHS 6,000. Kofi Amammuo said they are bent on proving that the Mills administration is superintending some corrupt practices that can destroy the party.
Leaders of the group however declined to speak on record but said they are still considering their options after brief meetings with the leadership of the party.
